Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am concerned about my sleep. I have been unable to sleep comfortably for a few days because I believe my left nostril is blocked, and I feel like my heart is beating slowly.

I want to get some rest since I am exhausted. So kindly help me in resolving this issue.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. According to your statement, you have been experiencing shortness of breath when trying to sleep. You also get the sensation that your left nostril is obstructed and that your heartbeats are irregular. Orthopnea is the sensation of being out of breath while lying down. Sleep apnea, panic disorder, obesity, heart failure, asthma, allergies, dehydration, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD, pregnancy, respiratory infections such as the common cold, flu, or sinus infections, and so on can all cause orthopnea.

A clinical examination and other investigations may be required to determine the reason. For example, you can take tests such as pulse oximetry, CXR (chest X-ray), ECG (Electrocardiogram), ECHO (Echocardiography), spirometry, stress testing, and sleep studies to determine the specific source of your current symptoms and treat them accordingly.

In the meanwhile, you can try resting on your side with a pillow between your legs and elevating your head with pillows, using decongestants before sleep, losing weight, managing stress, eating at least 2 hours before going to bed, and using anxiolytic drugs, which can help in reducing the discomfort.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I am not only having difficulties sleeping, but I have also been experiencing shortness of breath and neck aches for the past two days. When I take a breath, it pains on the backside of my neck, and when I move my head, it hurts on both back sides of my neck. I also have a blocked nose during the day but do not have any cold or fever.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

The neck and shoulders muscles, together with the primary breathing muscles, can aid in promoting breathing. When lying down, neck discomfort caused by a pinched nerve, increased workload, injury or trauma, and strain or sprain in the neck muscles that sustain the posture can cause weakness and shortness of breath. Neck discomfort can also induce muscle weakness, orthopnea, or shortness of breath when lying down.

Neck discomfort can also induce muscle weakness, orthopnea, or shortness of breath when lying down. Again, similar symptoms may be caused by bacterial or viral infections of the layer that protects the brain and spinal cord.

Without investigations, it is difficult to determine the specific reasons for your current problems. Investigations such as MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging), in addition to the above-stated examinations, may aid in determining the precise underlying causes.

You can also take the measures I have previously suggested, and they may assist in relieving your current pain.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
