Can contaminated syringe cause fever, vomiting, and diarrhea during blood donation?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I underwent a blood donation two weeks ago. Yesterday I had a fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. What are infections possible if the needle or the syringe they use in the blood donation is not new if it has been used before? What are the infections that I can get?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

I understand your concern. Usually, blood donations are made through new sterile equipment. This is to avoid infection and blockage of needles from blood coagulation. So, I do not think they might have pre-used needles. Your current fever, vomiting, and diarrhea symptoms suggest acute bowel infection, most probably viral. I suggest you to follow a few instructions mentioned below.

  1. Get stool examination and culture to determine the correct diagnosis.
  2. Drink plenty of fluids with oral rehydration salt.
  3. Take Pepto Bismol for diarrhea.
  4. Take probiotics to stabilize intestinal flora.
  5. Follow a BRAT diet (banana, rice, apple sauce, toast).

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
