Can the white gum that fell off during brushing cause severe dental issues?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was just brushing my teeth, and a piece of gum fell off along my bottom front teeth. Not from the edge of the gum, though. It was further down and a small round piece. It looked white before it fell away. Now I have this random little hole in my gum. Why did this happen, and what do I need to do? There was no trauma or injury to the gum to have caused this.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

If the gum looked white first and then a portion fell off then it is most probably a boil over the gum, and the membrane over it has fallen off. Do not worry, as there is nothing to worry. You can apply Chlorohexidine gel over it, and the gum will heal gradually. If it does not show signs of healing in the next four to five days, you should get checked by a nearby dentist or send me an image of the gum for further help. Thanks.
