Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I attended a colonoscopy appointment as I was having a change of bowel habits in the form of alternating constipation and/or diarrhea and large mushy yellow/orange stools. However, I was on Iron tablets and had stopped them five days before the procedure; however, two days before the procedure, I mistakenly took a tablet. Would this affect the result? The consultant said that he could see everything, and there were no black stools. He said that my bowel preparation was good.

Due to poor vein location, I was unable to get a sedative, and they proceeded to do the procedure without a sedative. Due to pain experience, he only concentrated on the left-hand side as he said that was the side where cancer is likely to appear in relation to the change in bowel habit. He is referring me for a CT scan.

I also have gallstones. Could these even be responsible for my problem of large mushy and smelly stools and diarrhea?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Iron tablets would not affect the results. CT (Computerized tomography) scan can be done as it will give more information.

Also, CEA (Carcinoembryonic antigen) test, CA (Cancer antigen) 19-9 test, and Tumour marker test should be done.

Gallstones can cause such symptoms. You should get gallstones surgery done.

You should take probiotics, avoid milk, and stop Iron as iron is not stomach-friendly.

Kindly reach out in case of further queries.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

CEA, CA 19-9, and tumor markers are done and are within normal limits. Also, the fact that my consultant said he was not worried is a good sign, right? I need to take Iron as I have anemia caused by heavy periods. I will consider gallstone surgery. What is a probiotic?

Answered by Dr. Rajesh Gulati

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Iron causes black stool and discomfort to the abdomen. If such symptoms are present, then you can get an injection of Encicarb (Ferric carboxymaltose) 500 mg in 100 ml NS (Normal saline) over 1 hour.

You can repeat it every two weeks. It is an intravenous (IV) injection for low iron levels.

Probiotics are good for the stomach. Curd and buttermilk are rich sources of probiotics.

You can also take capsule Vizylac (Lactic acid bacillus) as probiotics twice daily.

Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
