Patient's Query

Hello doctor.

I had sex on the 7th day of my period but during intercourse, my partner's condom broke and it seems like some semen got inside my vagina. I took I pill on next day then my withdrawal bleeding started but I have not got my period yet. I also had a urine pregnancy test which came negative. Can I be pregnant?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

Emergency contraceptive pills, such as the I-pill, can be effective at preventing pregnancy if taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse. However, they are not 100 % effective, and there is still a small chance of getting pregnant even if you take them. The timing of your withdrawal bleeding and negative pregnancy test suggest that you are not pregnant. However, it is possible that your menstrual cycle may have been affected by taking the emergency contraceptive pill. It is not uncommon for the timing and duration of your period to be different after taking an emergency contraceptive pill. If you are still concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, you can take another pregnancy test after a week or two, or visit your gynecologist for sonography.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.
