Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had an abortion five weeks ago and I noticed that my breasts have been returning to their normal size. But, one of my breasts has become significantly larger than my other breast. Should I be concerned? Should I see a gynecologist?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

If, like you said, one of your breasts is significantly larger than the other, then definitely you should consult a gynecologist for a clinical examination and if required, get a sonography, mammography and also some blood tests like prolactin level done. Generally, at around 12 weeks of pregnancy, the breasts can start secreting milk. So, if you had an abortion and secretions had started coming, we may need to suppress the secretion with medicines. Remember the following:

  1. For now, do not handle the breast.
  2. Wear a tight bra for good support.
  3. If it is painful, consult a specialist immediately.

Though the reasons may be varied, a clinical examination and prolactin level test along with sonography will be enough to arrive at a diagnosis as well as give us clarity on the treatment plan. Let me tell you that a slight difference in size is normal though. And if a lump is suspected, it may need to be surgically removed. Basically, the final management depends on the reports and clinical examination.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
