Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I underwent a C-section and delivered a baby a month ago. My baby had a weight of 5.51 lbs and had a full-term birth. I do not had milk supply for a week even tried doing it by hand. So I started to give a bottle feed for my baby. After a week, I took Lactate tablets and so I got 0.33 fl oz of milk in a pumping session from both the breasts. The baby was not latching and gets irritated when we put it to the breast forcefully. So I continued to pump small amounts of 0.67 to 1.33 fl oz per session to supplement along with the formula. Now I stopped pumping as the baby is having gaseous distension of the abdomen and flatulence. She takes Lactose-free formula for fifteen days and I was told to resume normal formula slowly after fifteen days. Can I start pumping after fifteen days as I still get milk?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Yes, you can start pumping. The trick for getting the child off the bottle is to try and put the child onto the breastfeeding for ten to fifteen minutes before giving top feeds. Please do not give it immediately before breastfeeding. This is the way to train the child to get breastfeeding and milk production will also increase slowly. In the meantime, top feeds will take care of the deficit. Gradually as the child gets trained, the child will reduce the intake of top feeds. For the gas problem, it is a normal phenomenon and it does not require any intervention.
