Newborn respiratory distress syndrome usually affects premature babies whose lungs are not fully developed, thereby producing breathing difficulties. It is also known as surfactant deficiency lung disease because it is characterized by the deficiency of surfactant. It is because the surfactant of the lung is generally produced only between 24th and 28th week. Steroid injections are to be given before birth in babies who are suspected to be born prematurely. Ventilator support may be needed after birth.
