Hi doctor,

I get periods after every week, and it has been happening for the last four months. I get a brownish vaginal discharge, severe abdominal pain and itching in the vagina, and a burning sensation during urination. There is swelling in the abdominal area and swollen feet. I also have severe pain in my back and legs. What are the causes?

I will suggest you some precautions, investigations, and treatments:

  • I suggest you take urinalysis, urine culture, vaginal swab test, thyroid function test, complete blood count, and pelvic scan with a full bladder. Collect all results of investigations and discuss them with a local gynecologist or with me.
  • Drinking plenty of water and cranberry juice is better for urine infection.
  • Follow strict local hygiene.
  • Wear soft and comfortable undergarments.
  • Use warm water for cleaning or sit in warm water for relief.
  • Start iron supplements to prevent the chances of anemia.
  • Start combined oral contraceptive pills for two to three weeks to regulate cycles after consulting with your physician. It will not only stop your continuous bleeding but also will give help regulate periods.
  • After collection of laboratory test results, have tablet Doxycycline 100 mg 12 hourly and tablet Metronidazole 400 mg eight hourly for seven days.
  • Undergo treatment for any other diseases you have.
  • A healthy, nutritious diet with daily exercise and walking is needed.
