Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My tongue is white, and I have bumps on the back of my tongue. Is it thrush?

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I have reviewed the pictures you shared (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity). The bumps are circumvallate papillae, which are a type of taste buds. This is the normal anatomy found in the healthy tongue. The white coating on your tongue looks normal unless you see white substances coming off while using a tongue cleaner. If there is such peeling, it can be a fungal infection that requires treatment. Tongue cleaning will help maintain a healthy tongue. If uncomfortable using a separate tongue cleaner, you can always use the back of the brush (brush with tongue cleaning attachment).

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
