Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a fleshy mobile growth at the side of my tongue near the base, exactly where the throat meets the tongue. I found it accidentally. As it is painless, I am unaware of it. I have tried to visualize it, but I cannot view it due to its position. It does not bleed, and it is smooth. I am 42 years old and do not smoke or drink. None of my lymph nodes are enlarged. My vitals are normal.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. According to its site, it can be a normal anatomical variation. I recommend following up the next month. A biopsy is recommended in case of an increase in its size, change of color, ulceration, or bleeding.

Patient's Query

Thank you, doctor,

It has not changed in size for the past six months. It is smooth and does not have any open areas. It almost feels like a polyp when it moves. I was trying to avoid hospital visits until Covid gets settled down, but it may not happen as many people are still not vaccinated.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. Smooth polyps are benign in nature. In comparison, malignant masses are ulcerative, fungating, and bloody. All you can do is avoid spicy and crispy foods that can scratch or injure the polyp. Would suggest a photo of the polyp as it can be helpful. The biopsy is the only confirmatory diagnostic tool in case of mass growth.

Patient's Query

Thank you, doctor,

I am unable to get a picture, but I can visualize it with an oral mirror. It is on the right side of the tongue at the base. It is perfectly round, smooth, and whiter than the mucosa. It is hard to notice because it blends in.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com,

I understand your concern. As I said before, follow it up for any changes. Inspect it after a month. Do not inspect it daily to avoid anxiety.

Patient's Query

Thank you, doctor,

I have not checked it for a couple of months, but when I do, I get nervous. I guess I will go in and check.

Hello,

I understand your concern. You are welcome any time.
