Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I was diagnosed with Candida auris in my ear canal during a recent hospital stay. The ENT specialist mentioned that this is a rare site for such an infection. Currently, I am experiencing hearing loss and localized pain on one side. I have the following concerns:
Is it possible that the infection has progressed to the middle ear or other deeper structures?
Which antifungal agents are most effective for local ear application in treating Candida auris infections?
Should my family members be concerned about the potential spread of Candida auris within our home environment?
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understood your concern.
I have read your query and understand your concern.
Candida auris can cause infections in various parts of the body, including the bloodstream, wounds, and ears. A weakened immune system due to treatments like chemotherapy or corticosteroid therapy enables Candida to invade organs through the bloodstream.
Clinical treatment of Candida auris infections:
Echinocandins are the initial recommended treatment for adults.
Your doctor will likely prescribe antifungal ear drops, which may contain Clotrimazole, Fluconazole, or Miconazole.
Reports of Echinocandin-resistant and pan-resistant cases are increasing.
Candida auris can spread in healthcare settings through contact with contaminated surfaces or equipment, or from physical contact with an infected person.
Following these steps prevents the spread of Candida auris:
Good hand hygiene (either hand sanitizing with an alcohol-based hand rub or hand washing with soap and water) is critical for everyone, including healthcare personnel and visitors.
Use of gowns and gloves for visitors.
Appropriate and effective environmental cleaning and disinfection by healthcare facilities is a key part of infection prevention and control.
Healthcare facilities should communicate Candida auris status before transferring patients or residents known to have Candida auris.
I hope this helps.
Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.
Thank you.
