Hello doctor,

I had to work with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) twice a week for three months for my project, and I used all the necessary protection but I got abdominal pain. The doctor examined it and the sonography showed coarse parenchyma and ALT was raised by 10 units. I have pain in my right upper front and lower back. I sometimes feel thirsty. I also have liver inflammation. I am currently taking herbal liver protectives. However, I am still worried because even with medication I have pain. Should I avoid this toxic material? Can it cause cancer and how can I avoid it? Please give some tips on diet.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Are you an alcoholic, or do you smoke? Are you sure the ultrasound is showing any coarse echo texture? Please get it reviewed once since the echo texture is not usually coarse. Was there any fatty liver? Your current problem looks like gastritis and acidity problems. It does not look like poisoning. ALT (alanine transaminase) is nonsignificantly elevated, still, you will be at risk, as it can cause poisoning via inhalation as well. I suggest you do the following:

  1. Avoid spicy and fatty foods.
  2. Quit smoking if any.
  3. Regularize your sleep and exercise patterns.
  4. Take a small walk after meals instead of taking rest immediately.
  5. I suggest you take an acid suppressant like the tablet Pantoprazole 40 mg before breakfast once a day. Consult a specialist doctor, discuss with them, and take medications with their consent
  6. You should consume a diet rich in vitamin E and avoid alcohol.
  7. Take utmost precautions at the job.

There is not much data available about cancer.
