Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Every time I bite down, I bite my cheek, and it is really painful to eat, which started today. Also, when just resting my mouth, it is painful to close it because I bite a piece of my cheek. Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Upon review, cheek bite can be the reason and it can be due to the following. Cheek bite could be due to protrusion of tooth outside of the socket, either upper or lower, which brings the cheek in between teeth-probable cause bruxism. Another cause of cheek bite could be crossbite or scissors bite which brings occlusion problems and thus cheek bite. Another cause could be a sharp tooth which causes cheek injury. The provisional diagnosis is cheek bite. The differential diagnosis are crossbite and scissors bite. Do diagnostic tests such as clinical examination and bite check (occlusion). The treatment advised are using nightguards for bruxism. Crossbite or scissors bite require orthodontic correction of teeth and rounding of sharp tooth margins. The prognosis is good when the cause is treated. Regards.
