Can colorectal surgery cause erectile dysfunction?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My husband is 24 years old. He had colorectal surgery this year since he was diagnosed with Crohn's. He has about 5 to 7 surgeries within an 8-month span. It has been 11 months since the first surgery. Before the first surgery, he started to experience erectile dysfunction. Now after having recovered he still has ED. Is this something that can be fixed?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

Thanks for your query.

Erection is a physiological process that this generated in the brain area, this is because of certain stimuli, like visuals, talking, touch, and thinking of sex. There are many factors for ED. Important causes of erectile dysfunction are:

  1. Diabetes.
  2. Some medicines like antidepressants.
  3. Performance anxiety.
  4. Smoking and alcohol.
  5. You should check the medications if they are causing ED in your husband's case otherwise go for a Doppler study for blood flow in the penis.
  6. There are medicines that can cure erectile dysfunction like Sildenafil and Vardenafil (phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor) but they should be taken only under medical supervision as they can be harmful if taken in extra doses than needed.

I hope this helps.
