Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 33 years old and had unprotected sex. I took four tablets of Yasmin - a combined oral contraceptive, within 24 hours and four more after 12 hours. Will it act as an emergency contraceptive pill, or is there any chance of pregnancy?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Please give some more detailed description of your health.

  1. When you had sex?
  2. How long is your cycle? For example, if your regular cycle is 28 days, it could be your fertile period; without protection, you could have a conception.

If a proper dose of an emergency contraceptive is taken within 48 hours of unprotected sex without vomiting, then only it will help to prevent conception. Emergency contraceptives come separately with proper instructions. Yasmin is a cyclic combined oral contraceptive and is usually used as a regular contraceptive. If you have followed the instructions for proper dose within 48 hours of sex and without vomiting, then it will work.

Now, wait for a few days for withdrawal bleeding and observe for any alarming symptoms. Another option is taking a good emergency contraceptive pill within 48 hours post-sex to be safe. After taking hormonal contraceptives (if not taken during menstruation), bleeding can occur within one to two weeks. After that, the next few periods could be irregular but will regularize gradually as the effect of externally induced hormone finishes.

Hope this helps.

Thank you.
