Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I recently started having issues with my bowels for about a month. I have had sudden constipation and stool issues. When I do go, my bowels are thin and soft around the edges. I do have constant pressure in my lower stomach, and it hurts if pressed upon. I have tried exercise, probiotics, fiber supplements, and increasing my water intake. I have had incidents when I could not make it to the restroom because I suddenly needed to go with no warning.

I am currently on 75 mg Venlafaxine daily and have had a Mirena IUD for three years. I did have an x-ray done of my stomach about a year ago, and the doctor noted there was a large amount of bowels in my colon, but nothing was suggested at the time. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

If the problem were only with your intestine motility, it would have been called to a certain extent using probiotics and laxatives. If the problem does not seem to decrease with the use of symptomatic medications, then we will have to evaluate why the motility of your gut has reduced. The usual causes in such cases are electrolyte imbalance, mainly calcium and potassium.

I would advise you to get your electrolytes checked that are sodium, potassium, and calcium. If these are normal, then the most common causes of such problems will be ruled out.

I would also advise you to change your diet to include a little less roughages and a bit more spice, which would stimulate the motility of your bowels. Keep the fixed timing of your food intake, eating food at different times on different days will hamper your gut's motility.

You can also get your thyroid profile check for hypothyroidism, which can cause such problems.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
