Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My mother experienced COVID-19 symptoms last two weeks ago. Now she is feeling a little bit better. However, her bowel movement is not normal, and she has been constipated for three weeks. She took a laxative, but it did not work. She also tried extra virgin coconut oil, but still, she is not able to pass her stools normally. She has high blood sugar levels, and she is taking the tablet Fluimucil for cough. Please prescribe us medicines and advise us on how we can handle her situation.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

If the constipation is not relieved even with medications, an organic cause of obstruction should be ruled out. For this, you will need an abdomen x-ray in an erect and supine position. Secondly, electrolyte abnormalities should be checked. Kindly get serum potassium, sodium, calcium, and magnesium levels checked. If any abnormality is found in these tests, treating the abnormality will cure constipation. For medications, you should take tablet Bisacodyl (laxative) 5 mg twice daily along with Liquid Paraffin syrup. This will give some relief. But I will insist on getting these tests done as missing the diagnosis will worsen symptoms.

Hope this helps.

Thank you.
