Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I read about the ancient practice of drinking water from copper vessels. Is it really good for health? My 3-year-old son has wheezing and respiratory problems. Also, he was admitted to the hospital for sepsis. He is using the Foracort inhaler twice a day and Zincovit syrup once a day. Can I boil a few tulsi leaves in water and store that water in a copper thermos flask for my son? Kindly reply.

Answered by Dr. Alka

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I just read your query.

Our elders and seers advise us to take water stored in a copper vessel, and scientifically it has been proven too. Copper has antibacterial, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties. So, you can take water stored in a copper vessel and give it to your little one. After storing water at least for 8 hours, you can consume it. According to Ayurveda, this water is known as Tamra Jal, and it helps in balancing all three doshas and has many benefits. Remember one more thing that the copper is not innately utilized by our body, so too much of copper intake can be detrimental. So have some precautions like buying a copper vessel which is made of pure copper and consuming this water twice or thrice a day is sufficient.

Now coming to your kid's current respiratory tract problem, rather than storing tulsi based water I would advise you another decoction which is more effective for your baby. Take two to three tulsi leaves, some ginger, a pinch of black pepper, cardamom and some amount of fennel. Boil it in water and when half water remains give it to your baby with honey twice a day. Make fresh decoction every time you use it. All these will help in curing respiratory problem soon. You can also make a fine powder of all these and can give it with honey twice a day. Give him half teaspoon of this powder, as far as decoction is concerned 1 to 2 tsp is sufficient. If tulsi leaves are fresh, then add their juice to the powder. Use this regularly for one to two weeks, and you will soon see positive results.

Along with this, I suggest syrup Septilin (Tinospora Gulancha, Liquorice, Indian Bdellium) (Himalaya) half teaspoon twice a day with lukewarm water for two weeks. It will build more immunity in your baby and help to get relief from the infection he previously had. Take some precautionary measures like if you feed him with a bottle, boil the nipple and bottle every time before use. Try to change the nipple every week or after 10 days. Try to change his bottle after one or one and a half month. I am telling you all this because he got sepsis. Try to train your little one for having liquids with the help of sipper and glasses. As frequent bottle use also leads to infections rapidly.

As he is having foracort inhaler two times, give him plain water steam twice a day. No need to cover your baby. Just take him in your lap and give him steam for 5 to 10 minutes as long as he is comfortable. Steam will help him a lot. Give him healthy and homemade food. Soon he will be completely fine.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Currently, I give him a herbal mixture of honey, dates, cashew nuts, dry ginger, almonds, black pepper, long pepper, cumin, and Malabar nut. Can I continue giving this mixture in the morning and follow your decoction in the evening? Please advise.

Answered by Dr. Alka

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

As you are already giving him a mixture, then add the other things left in my decoction like tulsi leaves, cardamom, and fennel. It would be easier for you to give one combination as compared to two. Along with this give him syrup Septilin for two weeks as suggested to you earlier. Septilin helps in building immunity faster because babies tend to catch any infection faster than adults. Take all other preventive measures too. Your son will be fine very soon.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for clearing my doubts. I will give the concoction and Septilin as advised.

Answered by Dr. Alka

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

As Oxipod CV is an antibiotic and contains Cefpodoxime and Clavulanic acid, do not use Septilin along with the antibiotic. Once you completed the antibiotic course for five days or as many days prescribed to you, start giving your baby syrup Septilin as I told you earlier. Earlier I said you to provide him with half tsp twice a day, but you can give him half tsp twice a day now, as the weather is changing and he again got the infection then this might be due to allergens in the air or may be due to low immunity. The concoction I prescribed you earlier you can continue with the current allopathic medicine and can continue after that too.

Asthakind DX syrup (has Dextromethorphan, Chlorpheniramine, etc.,) is prescribed in various conditions like nasal congestion, dry cough, and allergic diseases. Once your doctor stops the medicine, then give your baby syrup Koflet half teaspoon with water for ten days, because it is helpful in allergic conditions and will help in various respiratory conditions.

Levolin inhaler has Levosalbutamol and is bronchodilator, Foracort inhaler has Budesonide and Formoterol, it is anti-inflammatory and corticosteroid, it has long acting broncho dilating effect and also helps in allergic chest infection. Bronchodilator means which decrease the resistance in respiratory airway and increase the air flow. Your doctor will stop these inhalers once the condition starts improving.

Along with these inhalers give him plain water steam with a pinch of salt added in water two to three times a day. You can also add one drop ofeucalyptus oil in water. But be careful about oil, if your baby tolerates it well only then add it. Otherwise, give him regular steam with salt.

Babies usually suffer from symptoms of cold, flu or respiratory infection while changing of the season; this is because their immunity is not strong as elders and due to droplet infection (infection in air) or sometimes due to the allergy to pollens in the air. So always be careful during the change of season. Babies are always prone to catch the infection. Give him soups, lukewarm liquid diet, and semi-solid diet because he will tolerate it well and will digest it easily.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Yes, pediatrician diagnosed him to have an allergic cough and then started inhaler. Is this condition curable?

Answered by Dr. Alka

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The condition of allergy is curable. Sometimes it is completely cured with time sometimes partially depends on some factor and baby's overall growth.

As your baby grows up, his immunity will become stronger, and the lungs will grow accordingly, and the conditions improve. Once the baby reaches the age of six or seven and will able to understand your instructions, then you can start him breathing exercises. You can also consult a yoga teacher or physical trainer for help or suggestion regarding breathing exercises.

Various breathing exercises will make his lungs stronger and will help in preventing infection. Anulom vilom pranayama is one of them, and also a stretching spring comes in market, this spring has two or three strings. Initially, you will start with one string and ask him to stretch the string as much as he can with deep inspiration or inhalation then tell him to exhale slowly and also get back the spring to normal, repeat this exercise for some time daily. But all these measures are very far from now.

Right now you can only adopt preventive measures while the change of weather or whenever there is some unusual weather or somebody around him with a respiratory infection.

In preventive measures keeps his body warm during the change of season, whenever you feel a mild cough start giving him steam, start giving him concoction before the change of weather and give him healthy and fresh food. When he is fine, then give him citrus fruits and other fruits (orange, amla or Indian gooseberry, etc.,)as they boost immunity and all other foods which are good for health. Always keep your hand clean before making his food or before feeding him.

Every month give him half teaspoon of honey once a day for 10 to 15 days and then stop it after that. After a gap of 10 or 15 days again repeat it. It will help him boosting immunity and also control his allergy. But make sure the honey should be pure.

Promote him for more outdoor activities as physical exercise will also improve his health. All these things will help him a lot.

Regarding follow up

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been giving my 3-1/2-year-old son Septilin, Koflet, concoction, and steam. His cough seems to have reduced. In my place summer is at its peak. Given that you know his medical history, can you suggest me any fruits or drinks that I can give my son during summer? He has mild heat boils on his nose.

Answered by Dr. Alka

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Good to know about your baby's condition. You can give him coconut water as it is full of electrolytes and is good for your baby. Because the salt and water loss due to heat will be compensated by coconut water.

Besides this, if the baby does not have a constipation problem, then you can give him apple, pomegranate and other seasonal fruits and their juice. Apple and pomegranate can cause constipation if given in excessive amount. So, give these moderately. Before giving him fruits taste them if they are sour then avoid giving him because sour fruits may cause a cough and other problem.

In juices add sugar or honey so that they become sweet and whatever juice you give him, or even coconut water give him at room temperature. It has two benefits, as room temperature liquid is easy to digest for your baby and does not interfere with his cough and cold problem.

In summers water and salt loss occurs due to sweat so give him liquids accordingly. If he passes urine frequently then no need to worry.

For heat boils, first of all, do not squeeze them or scratch them otherwise they will affect the neighbor areas too. Wash the face gently twice a day with mild soap or facewash and with water. You can use a reputed brand herbal neem face wash. If you are already using any product and it seems to be good then keep on using it.

Take Multani mitti (Fuller's earth) if readily available to you, add some rose water in it and apply gently on heat boils one or two times a day and when it dries wash it off. It will help in vanishing them off. You can use it on other parts too if heat boils occur.

Take Lactocalamine lotion of any reputed brand and apply once or twice a day on heat boils and after it dries gently wipe it. If you do not want to clean it, then use it at night and leave it. In morning wipe it off while washing face. With both these things, his heat boils will soon start shedding off in two or three days.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

In the concoction recipe that you prescribed earlier, there is cardamom. Does that mean black or green cardamom?

Answered by Dr. Alka

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I mentioned was black cardamom. Black cardamom helps in relieving cough symptoms. Tulsi leaves are holy basal leaves. You can add whichever variety of holy basal leaves available there. I hope you get all the ingredients clear. In case you find any difficulty then you can consult me. Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My son got his follow up medical checkup from his pediatrician today. He was prescribed Alerid syrup for 5 days, Lasma 4 for 10 days, and junior Lanzol for 5 days since he complained of mild pain in his belly button. I think I can continue the concoction with the above medicines. Am I right doctor? Can I continue giving Septilin also along with the above allopathic medicines?

Answered by Dr. Alka

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The medicines you mentioned here are Alerid syrup which contains cetirizine as a constituent and is given in allergic conditions. Lasma syrup contains Montelukast which is also anti-allergic but is more prescribed when allergic asthma or respiratory tract infection due to allergy is there.

Junior Lanzol contains Lansoprazole and is antacid used in hyperacidity. It is mostly given empty stomach in the morning.

You can give the concoction and Septilin with all the above-mentioned medicines. But do not give any two medicines together. Keep at least half an hour gap between two medicines or set time according to your convenience. This way there will be no chance of drug interaction.

The concoction you can give him any time a day, but do not give him in an empty stomach. The best time is to give it around 11:00 am after breakfast. You can also set time according to your convenience.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
