Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had a persistent cough for more than two weeks. Also, I have irritation in the back of my throat, which worsens at night. Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Your history shows you are suffering from a 'Post-nasal drip.'

Post-nasal drip (PND) is the drainage of secretion from the nose or paranasal sinuses into the pharynx. That is probably why you feel the 'tickle' in your throat. The mechanism of PND is not well understood; however, increased sensitivity of the larynx, pharynx, or allergy may have some role. Other reasons for the cough may be gastroesophageal reflux disease and asthma. I want to know whether you have heartburn, chest pain, regurgitation, wheezing, or chest tightness. At this stage, investigations will not be required. I would suggest tablet Cetirizine 10 mg at night for three days. Further treatment will depend upon the response. Also, avoid known allergens, if possible.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
