Patient's Query

Hi doctor.

I had not got my blood work done in quite some time. My BMI is 35, and I have a vitamin D deficiency, 12 ng/dL (average value according to this test is more than 30 ng/dL). Values in CBC were in the normal range except MPV, which was 12.6 fL, which is 0.1 fL higher than the normal range (7.0 to 12.5 fL). The lab did not do a smear. I have read that being too heavy, Vitamin D deficiency, and anxiety disorder or depression can cause an elevated MPV. And my main concern in asking this question is to get the COVID-19 vaccine. As I read that increased MPV affects clotting, and the COVID vaccine causes blood clots, I am concerned. I have started a weight management program as I feel I am too heavy.

Please help me. I have attached my reports along with this.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have checked the attached reports (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity). Your reports are within range, so do not worry. MPV (mean platelet volume) is borderline. Sometimes value could be borderline in a normal individual as well. There is no direct correlation with increase risk of blood clotting and vaccine. And it is not proven yet. Obesity itself can be a high risk for clotting. Your BMI (body mass index) is increased. So, kindly reduce weight by lifestyle change and more exercise. Obesity is no contraindication for taking the vaccine. You can take your vaccine.

I hope your doubt is solved. Let me know if I can assist you further.
