Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was affected by the Coronavirus three months back and lost my smell and some of my taste. I retested, and my results came back negative. I still cannot smell after three months, and I wondered if any medication could reverse my anosmia.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thanks for briefing regarding the problem in concern. This is perfectly normal as 70 percent of patients who have been found COVID-19 positive have coincidently had complaints of anosmia (loss of sense of smell) and altered sense of taste (dysgeusia). The loss of smell and taste is sudden in 80 percent, while it is gradual in the rest. The virus attacks the olfactory receptors in the skull base, not allowing smell processing and effective transmission to occur. This results in a loss of perception of smell. The smell and taste processing areas are very closely located in the brain and work together. If there is less processing of smell, the taste perception also comes down, and that why you might initially have altered perception of taste and then complete loss. Some of the immunocompetent patients had other complaints such as headaches, weakness, fever, etc., associated as well, while some have only loss of smell and taste. It might take approximately around four months on average to get 50 percent of both smell and taste function back with what I have observed. This time duration might vary, and for now, there is nothing that you need to do, not worry. There is no time tested medication to bring back the function of taste and smell quickly and effectively. I am sure both the perception of smell and taste will improve over time, and you will be entirely back to normal. If there is anything that you want to know or enquire about, please do let me know. Warm regards.
