Can frequent knuckle cracking cause joint instability?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been cracking my knuckles for a long time (one to four years, maybe?), and at some point, the knuckles of my middle fingers (on both hands) have started to move sideways. Should I be worried?

Please advise.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Cracking knuckles is a common habit that typically does not lead to serious issues. The sound you hear when cracking your knuckles is caused by the rapid release of gas from the synovial fluid in the joints. However, the ability of your middle finger knuckles to move sideways could indicate ligament laxity or joint instability. This might occur if the ligaments stabilizing your knuckles have been stretched or weakened over time, possibly due to frequent knuckle cracking.

Monitor your finger joints for any signs of pain, swelling, or changes in range of motion. Reducing the frequency of knuckle cracking can help prevent further stretching of the ligaments and allow them to regain stability. Gentle finger and hand exercises can strengthen the muscles around your joints, providing better support and stability. Consulting a physiotherapist can be beneficial. Avoid activities that excessively strain your finger joints. Consider getting X-rays or an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) to assess the condition of your joints and ligaments. Additionally, a physical examination by an orthopedic specialist would be advisable.

I hope this information helps you, and please reach out if you have any doubts.

Best wishes.
