HomeAnswersObstetrics and Gynecologydelayed periodI had itching and a burning sensation in my vagina during unprotected sex, and now my period is delayed by three days. Does this indicate pregnancy or a yeast infection?

How can someone identify the cause for a delay in periods?

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 20-year-old female, and I had my last period in the mid of last month. I had fertile days in the last week of the month. I had unprotected sex in the first week of this week and had my ovulation five days before the sex. The duration of the sex was short as it was painful, as I had itchiness and a burning sensation in my vagina along with yellowish-white discharge. Now my period is delayed for three days. Is there a chance I might be pregnant, or is this due to the yeast infection? Also, this is the first time I have had sex in the last six months. Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I understand your concern.

I suggest you get a serum hCG (human chorionic gonadotrophin) test to know if you are pregnant—also, a high vaginal swab test to diagnose the organism causing the vaginal infection. I would also suggest:

  1. Follow proper hygiene.
  2. Wear soft undergarments, and also avoid wearing tight undergarments.
  3. Use condoms to reduce the chance of getting sexually transmitted diseases.
  4. Use Canesten pessary (Clotrimazole) on alternate nights in the vagina.

After giving the sample for the swab test, I would suggest the following:

  1. Tablet Doxycycline 100 mg 12 hourly for seven days.
  2. Tablet Metronidazole 400 mg eight hourly for seven days.
  3. Tablet Paracetamol 500 mg in case you have pain at eight hours intervals.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
