Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 24-year-old girl. I had my last period a month back. I have not gotten my periods in this month. I am six days late. I have taken three consecutive urine pregnancy tests after the first day of my missed period and all of them were negative. Should I trust them? I always get my period four to five days late but never this late. Should I be worried? Can I trust the test results? I had intercourse on the first and 14th day of this month. Currently, I am taking Azithromycin for minor throat infection.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Yes, these tests are trustworthy. You should repeat it after a week if there is no period. We may get done blood pregnancy test if urine pregnancy test is negative after a week. Upto a week variation in period is quite common. Were the intercourse protected or unprotected? Did you have an I-pill, if yes it can cause delay in period? So overall, if I-pill (Levonorgestrel) was taken then it is a likely cause for delayed period, or else we will wait and get test done after a week.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

In my knowledge, yes I had protected sex. How do I know my cycle length? I am usually four to five days late. Should I have had my period by 26th of this month? How late is it in my case? I have had irregular periods.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Your cycle length is around 33 days. Usually, variation upto 35 days is considered as acceptable in normal individuals with irregular periods, but since you have a history of irregular periods so may not be applicable to you. However, your cycle length this month is certainly delayed but considering you had history of irregular periods, the underlying hormonal issue may be the reason. But, yes we cannot rule out the possibility of pregnancy at this moment. So repeating the test after an interval of one week and getting blood pregnancy test (blood hCG - human chorionic gonadotropin levels) done are next step.
