Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 19-year-old female, and I had my first period when I was 16 years old. But my period was 30 days late last month. And this month it is late by two days and I still did not have it. There is a change in the smell of the vaginal discharge, too; it has a fishy smell now from the past week. What could be the reason? Kindly help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The foul-smelling discharge from the vagina could be due to any pelvic infection, which could be sexually transmitted. I would suggest getting a high vaginal swab test to find what is causing the infection. After giving the samples, I would suggest having tablet Metronidazole 400 mg 8 hourly for seven days. If the period cycles are irregular, I would suggest having combined oral contraceptives for three months as hormonal support to regulate the cycle. Also, have sitz bath for vaginal irritation. Wear soft and comfortable undergarments. If you observe irregular or scanty periods, abnormal hair growth, or sudden weight gain, I suggest transvaginal scanning two days after your periods and sex hormonal tests.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
