Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been trying to get pregnant for the past few months. We had sexual activity from the 10 the day of my last menstrual cycle until now. My menstrual cycle usually lasts for around 30 days, and now it is kind of delayed. As a result, I have been experiencing the following symptoms for a few days.

1. Nausea.

2. Headaches.

3. Breast soreness.

4. A dull lower back pain.

5. Sleeplessness.

6. Fatigue.

7. Smell aversions and sudden weight gain.

I observed thickened cervical mucus on the 22nd day of my menstrual cycle and slight spotting on the 26th day. I have done three home pregnancy tests, and all were negative. I also did a blood test after a few days, which was also negative. Finally, someone told me to try an old wife's tale, which entails mixing urine with Dettol, and it was negative.

Could these symptoms relate to another illness? Or is it due to pregnancy?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

The symptoms you are experiencing are the symptoms of early pregnancy, but they are also common in premenstrual syndrome (PMS), especially when you get a delayed period. As you have said, your cycle length is usually more than 30 days; there could be a possibility that your ovulation in this particular cycle may have got delayed leading to negative blood and urine result. So the best option you have now is to wait and repeat the urine pregnancy test after one week again. If it is still negative, then I think you should consult a specialist doctor and discuss your issues.

Even if you do not get pregnant in this cycle, do not bother much. It usually takes 6 to 12 months for a normal couple with healthy sexual life to conceive. I suggest you check your thyroid profile and start taking tablets of Folic acid 5 mg daily to avoid any neurological anomaly in the baby (consult your specialist doctor, talk with them and take medications with their consent).

Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
