Why is my period late despite a negative pregnancy test?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Last month, my partner and I had intercourse a couple of times, and again this month, on two occasions. My last period started mid-last month. We used withdrawal each time, and he did not ejaculate inside me. Now my period is late, so this morning I took a pregnancy test with my first urine sample, and the result was negative. I am wondering what could be the reason for the delay in my period, and if there is still any chance of pregnancy even though the test was negative. My cycle has been regular over the last few months at approximately 28 days, so I am a little worried.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com. I read your query and can understand your concern.

Delays in periods make one anxious, and it is pretty normal. Considering the history you have provided, your cycles are regular, so even a little delay would naturally get you concerned. Your partner used the withdrawal method and did not ejaculate inside. That makes the pregnancy likelihood very low. On top of this, a negative pregnancy test taken with your first morning urine is reassuring, as it is the best time for early detection.

Delays in one's menstrual cycle may be due to many causes other than pregnancy, including stress, sleep or diet changes, recent illness, weight gains or losses, or normal hormonal shifts. Even the most minimal interference can impact ovulation and change your cycle. If your period does not arrive within the next week, repeating the pregnancy test would be the reasonable next step.

To better understand the situation, can you tell me whether you have experienced other symptoms like abnormal discharge, pelvic pain, fever, or tenderness of the breasts? This will help in ascertaining if there is another cause for the delay.

I hope the information helps.

Kindly revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
