Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am currently going through depression. I have been having suicidal thoughts. I have been thinking about death quite often. The last time when I felt depressed, I tried to cut my veins but got caught. For example the other day at school, I imagined a way of killing a girl. I do not know what to think. I just hope I am not crazy. Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Firstly, I understand that you are going through a very difficult time right now. However, you are dealing with it courageously, and I commend your effort to reach out for help here. We often feel sad, upset, and down in life due to various reasons or followed by traumatic events. Usually, there are certain thoughts that make us feel this way. I would urge you to first recognize the exact thoughts which make you feel sad and depressed. Since various issues in our lives are often not in our hands to change, it is advisable that we either find a way around them or find a different way to look at them. You will have to write down on paper what you would like to change currently in your life and if there is anything you do about them. Secondly, as you are concerned dearly about your mother, I would say that you are a loving daughter to her and that she is probably very proud of you. As you care for her, she certainly cares about you and as time goes by with coming of age, she is the one who will need your care and support more than ever. It is very loving of you to always keep her in your thoughts. Now, in order to change the way we feel bad or down about certain things, we also have to bring about some changes in our lifestyle.

A very effective tool is meditation especially mindfulness, which is known to reduce our anxiety and relax our mind. Once the storm of emotions settles down with the help of meditation, you will be certainly more able to think through clearly. Physical exercise is also beneficial to both body and mind. Including a brisk walk or run of at least 20 minutes daily in your routine will manifest your physical energy in pushing your mind forward. Finally, I would say that harming yourself or others will hardly be productive. Indeed, people are bound to make mistakes and certainly, we have to learn to forgive ourselves and others as well in life. If the self-harm, suicidal and homicidal thoughts persist, then I urge you to consult a local psychiatrist at the earliest. Life is a precious gift. It is surely in your hands to turn the adverse circumstances around and use them to emerge as a victor and an exemplary daughter to your mother.

Thank you.
