How do we manage diabetes and heart risks effectively?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am concerned about my 50-year-old neighbor, who has been managing type 1 diabetes for years but is now facing worsening health. His weight has gotten out of control, and his blood sugar levels are consistently over 250 milligrams/deciliters, which seems to be causing multiple issues. He also experiences chest pain when walking, which has made him afraid of developing heart problems. Recently, he has had irregularities in his EKG (electrocardiogram), which has made him anxious about having a heart attack.

I am wondering if his weight is making his health worse, especially with his diabetes and chest pain. Could being overweight contribute to the chest pain and irregular EKG (electrocardiogram) results, or are these symptoms more related to his diabetes? Given his age and health issues, what treatments or management options should he consider for both his diabetes and heart health? Is it possible for him to improve his situation through better blood sugar control and weight management, or should he focus more on heart health specifically? I am worried about his long-term well-being and would appreciate any advice on how he can improve his quality of life while managing both diabetes and heart risks.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Obesity is likely making both his diabetes and heart problems worse due to insulin resistance and extra strain on his heart. Having high blood sugar levels above 250 milligrams/deciliters can damage blood vessels and increase the risk of heart disease, which could explain his chest pain and irregular EKG (electrocardiogram). The first step should be to see a cardiologist to evaluate his chest pain and a diabetes specialist to help improve his blood sugar control with the right medications.

Losing weight, regularly checking his blood sugar, and following a heart-healthy, low-carb diet can all help. Medications and tools like continuous glucose monitors or insulin pumps may improve his diabetes management. Making lifestyle changes, such as exercising (once approved by a doctor) and practicing yoga or breathing exercises, is also important.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
