Hello doctor,

My weight is 47 kg, and my height is 5 feet and 9 inches. I was diagnosed with chronic diarrhea. The doctor has suggested medicines like Normaxin, Rifagut 400 and VSL#3. Are these effective for chronic diarrhea and gas? What foods should I take so that I start gaining some weight?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

  • The medicines you are on are usually used to treat chronic diarrhea. In addition, I can suggest a few things.
  1. Avoid the long-term use of these medicines. Keep it handy for troublesome situations only.
  2. Try to lead a stress and anxiety-free life, as these can alter your bowel habits.
  3. Consider regular aerobic exercises and meditations for stress relief. They will definitely help.
  4. Modify your diet. Consider taking a protein-based diet. Also, add more fiber.
  5. Do not get pre-occupied by the symptoms of gas, as with a good diet these will be relieved.
  6. Identify and make a note of those foods which alter your stool motility and adjust your diet accordingly.
  7. Bowel movements can vary from thrice a day to thrice a week. The number does not matter.
  8. Weight gain will automatically happen if you follow these instructions, but it will take time.

Hope I have cleared your concerns. Please feel free to get back as needed. Good luck.
