Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 36-year-old female with sickle cell disease, gastritis, and avascular necrosis of both shoulders. My gall bladder was removed two years ago, but the stomach pain is constant even with Protonics 40 mg twice daily. For the past week, I have had this pain in the lower left side of my belly. It started feeling like I had gas, I could feel it rise in my stomach on that side like an air bubble.

I have not eaten much besides cream of wheat and maybe two cups of chicken soup. I also have been using a heated massager constant on that side. The pain is not lessened by anything except sleep and as soon as I get up the pain is there. I tried a little laxative but it has not helped. This does not feel like gastritis pain nor does it feel like just gas. There is slight pain moving to my lower back on the left side as well. Talking makes me feel weak and winded like I could pass out. The pain itself feels like bad cramps like I ate something bad that would make one's stomach bubble and cramp and run to the bathroom. Like I need to have a bowel movement. It feels sharp and deep into my pelvis and it hurts the same sitting or standing. Please help me.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand how much pain you are in. Abdominal pains have various etiologies. The location and nature of the pain that you are suggesting point to a diagnosis of diverticulitis. It is an infection of a small outpouching of the large intestine mostly on the left side. To get a clear diagnosis we will have to get an abdominal ultrasound done which will rule out most of the etiologies. To pass normal soft stools I would suggest you take some good laxatives so that the bowel movement is strain less. You can try antispasmodics for the abdominal pain to see if it decreases. Do let me know if you get any of the tests done and if any of the medicines help.

Investigations to be done

Abdominal ultrasound.
