Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

The community dog that lives at my doorstep got a little angry at me. I was petting like every day after his snacks, and he snapped at me. It was just a warning snap, and there is no change in the dog’s character. Teeth might have touched my withdrawing arm but no scratch, blood, or even a mark. Do I need to take the rabies shots? Please advise.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. I am answering your query. Rabies is a deadly disease, and there are no contraindications for vaccination. According to your history, exposure may fall under the category I cannot know for sure without a physical examination. The exposed area should be cleaned with soap and running water for 15 minutes and should be applied with an antiseptic like Povidone-iodine. If there is any suspicion about the type of exposure, it is advisable to get vaccinated on days (zero, three, and seven), and the dog could be observed for ten days. If it is alive and healthy by that time, Post-exposure Vaccination can be converted to Pre-exposure Vaccination by skipping the dose on day 14. I hope this will help you.
