Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had trouble reading since I was a child, often misunderstanding written directions and rarely reading well (I mostly remembered what was being read). Even with reading glasses (relatively weak), I often cannot see the words correctly. The words are reasonably clear, if far, but I find it harder and harder to see the words on the page as they go in and out of focus. I experience the same dizzying sensation when looking over high railings or walking into a dark room (I sometimes risk falling as I get very disoriented in the dark). I struggle with tracking words across a page, focusing on single lines, and often the lines of text and individual words seem to vibrate vertically (sometimes horizontally), and the white spaces between the lines of text often confuse my eyes. In addition, sometimes, my eyes will go completely out of focus. I consulted a neuro-ophthalmologist who prescribed me prisms after witnessing some double vision during an exam. However, they did not help, and when I returned to him, he performed a second vision exam. I did not experience double vision during that visit, so he said I most likely do not have any problems and that the first test was a fluke. He was extremely confident I had a particular eye problem during the first exam (a form of vertical misalignment if I recall correctly), but during the second one, sans double vision, he completely dismissed my visual complaints and did not consider further testing. I was diagnosed with hippus when I was younger. My eyes often ache and tire quickly. I often get headaches as a result of reading. I would like to find some relief as my job requires a lot of reading. As it stands now, I often require someone to read the material to me or otherwise listen to voice-to-text readings. Should I try to see another doctor (this was one and a half years ago), or should I just try to manage these vision problems as a part of my physiology?Kindly help. Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and would recommend you get refraction under cycloplegia or after putting in Homide (Homatropine) eye drops to relax your ciliary muscles. Also, get Schirmer's test done to check for dryness. I would be able to guide you better if you could share your reports. Also, I need to know the prescription for your glasses and how much you can see with and without them. Kindly revert for further queries. Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
