Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 22-year-old female, and I study computer science. I spend about ten hours in front of multiple screens. Do anti-glare glasses work? How can I prevent eye damage from prolonged screen exposure? I have a fairly regular sleep schedule and get atleast seven hours of sleep and currently have no eye problems. Sunlight gives me a headache, though. I have slight fatigue around the eyes, feel tired, and mild sensitivity to sunlight.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thanks for writing in. When anti-glare glasses were first invented, the CRT (cathode-ray tube) monitors were the type of computer screens used back in the day. Nowadays, PCs (personnel computers) and laptops have LCD (liquid crystal display) screens, which are ergonomically created to prevent reflections and glare. Some people still profess that the anti-glare glasses help in eyestrain reduction. In my opinion, if you do not have a refractive error, you are only creating an obstruction of the light rays from reaching the retina of the eye by wearing them. The only possible way people might feel better is by preventing tear evaporation from air conditioning present in most offices. I would suggest using lubricating eye drops as evaporative dry eyes are the most common cause of eye symptoms on the computer. Also, take frequent breaks. Use sunglasses when outdoors as some people are more sensitive to bright lights and the dry eyes add to the intolerance. I hope this answered your question.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
