Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My son's right ear is aching. When I checked a while ago, it has some yellowish liquid. He has a light fever. I gave him Paracetamol first. Is there any ear drops I can buy over the counter? He is 4 years old and is 52 lbs.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

He has probably developed an acute ear infection and that is the reason why he has developed a ear discharge. Usually ear infection is secondary to a stuffy nose or due adenoid hypertrophy causing eustachian tube dysfunction. I Would like to ask a few other questions to ensure that the ear discharge does not recur.

1. Does your son have any decreased hearing or any hearing disturbances that you recently observed?

2. Does he open his mouth while he sleeps. Does he snore as well?

3. Has he been having this nasal twang when he speaks?

If you can please answer the questions mentioned above, we can treat the issue from the root level to prevent recurrence of the problem.

For the ear infection, you can consider the advice mentioned below:

1. Syrup Augmentin 228.5 mg (or its equivalent), 4 ml three times a day for next 1 week.

2. Syrup Ibugesic plus (or its equivalent) 4 ml three times a day for next 5 days.

3. Syrup lcz (Levocetrizine) 5 mg 4 ml at night for next 5 days.

4. Make sure the ear is kept dry at all times.

5. Please refrain from using ear buds at all times.

I think this should suffice to treat the ear infection. If there are additional issues, then we might have to treat that as well.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
