Hi doctor,
As advised by a family doctor, I did an LFT, and the result was AST 59.5 U/L, ALT 99.8 U/L, and GGT 65.5 U/L. Also, I did a sonography to check if the liver was fatty. Sonography revealed fatty liver grade 1. As per my doctor, elevated AST and ALT levels can be attributed to fatty liver. Nothing suggests liver damage due to alcohol. Myself is more of a casual drinker. Please advise whether the AST and ALT values observed could be attributed to casual alcohol consumption.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read all your concerns carefully, and I can say as follows:
You have used alcohol and been diagnosed with fatty liver. Otherwise, occasional alcohol use may elevate liver panel tests like AST (aspartate aminotransferase), ALT (alanine transaminase), and GGT (gamma-glutamyl transferase). In your case, you are reporting only AST and ALT elevation. In my opinion, your elevated liver tests are due to fatty liver. I noticed that you are overweight, plus alcohol use contributes to fatty liver.
You should quit alcohol for six weeks and repeat the liver panel test afterward. Meantime you can use Silymarin and Vitamin E as antioxidants for the liver. In your case, it is important to lose weight.
Thank you.
