Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I recently took an emergency contraceptive pill. This was just one day after my periods ended. After a week, I am experiencing light bleeding. This has never occurred to me before. I have taken four to five pills before, but this is the first time I am experiencing bleeding. My menstrual cycle is regular. Would this issue affect my regular cycle? Is this something to be worried about?

Please help, doctor.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your concern in detail and will surely help you out.

Emergency contraceptive pills are for emergency use only. They are not for routine use. If you are sexually active, I suggest (consult with a specialist doctor, talk with him or her and take the medicine with their consent) using regular contraception rather than using emergency contraception pills regularly. This is because emergency contraceptive pills are loaded with hormones to prevent fertilization and pregnancy. So taking these hormones regularly from outside interferes with the normal hormonal cycle of the body, thus causing intermittent light bleeding. Regarding bleeding, you need not worry. It will stop gradually, and your cycles may be abnormal for the next two to three months, but they will gradually normalize, given that you stop taking emergency contraceptive pills regularly.

Thank you.
