What could be the reason for very low menstrual bleeding after using an I-pill?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 20-year-old female. I had unprotected sex and had I-pill. My period came on the 28th day of my menstrual cycle this month, but it was very scanty, with only a little flow on the first and second days and only spotting on the third day. I took a urine pregnancy test four days after that spotting, and that was negative. Is there anything to be worried about?

Thank you.

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

You have taken emergency contraceptive pills. These hormones interfere with the normal process of fertilization and prevent the chances of conception. After emergency contraceptive pills, normally, there is withdrawal bleeding in the next 1 to 2 weeks. However, it seems you got that bleeding and not your regular menstruation. After that, withdrawal bleeding normal menstrual cycle can show irregularity, with unscheduled bleeding. To your satisfaction, you can do a serum beta hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) test to define your pregnancy status clearly. If it comes negative, you better wait for your body to reach normally.

Thank you.
