Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am trying to take birth control pills. I have bought Ovral L and Ovral G. I have been diagnosed with PCOS before four months and I am exercising regularly. Till last month, my period was regular. Is it safe to take a birth control pill after intercourse? Can a birth control pill be used as an emergency contraceptive pill? I have heard that Ovral L can be used in emergencies too. What is the dose to be taken? Is it necessary to take I-pill along with a birth control pill? What happens if I take I-pill along with it? Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Answered by Dr. Lorena Zijaj

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The contraceptive pill should be taken on the first day of the cycle. When you experience menstrual bleeding, you can start the pill. After seven days, the intercourse is safe. I will not recommend contraception to be used as an emergency pill. I recommend you take Ovral G (Norgestrel with Ethinyl estradiol) and it helps to control the symptoms of PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome).

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

Does Ovral G help to control PCOS symptoms? Can I use Ovral L instead of Ovral G?

Answered by Dr. Lorena Zijaj

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Ovral G contains Progesterone and has antiandrogenic properties. So it helps to control the symptoms of PCOS such as acne and excessive hair growth. Yes, you can use Ovral L (Ethinyl estradiol with Levonorgestrel) instead of Ovral G.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was involved in protected intercourse ten days before my last period, and have also taken an Ipill within two hours and another one after two days. I had a little spotting three weeks after the intercourse and got my hcg (human chorionic gonadotropin) levels tested and have attached my reports. What are the chances of getting pregnant and why are my periods delayed? Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Answered by Dr. Lorena Zijaj

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

I have reviewed your reports (attachments have been removed to protect the patient's privacy), and the b-hcg levels show that you are not pregnant. The irregular bleeding can be due to the I-pill (Levonorgestrel).

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Answered by Dr. Lorena Zijaj

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I would not recommend you to start contraception without menstrual bleeding. You have to start them at first day of your cycle, meanwhile barrier contraceptives can be used.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I would like to know the reason for which it is not recommended as I do not want to rely on barrier contraception and do not want to take I pill as it would further disrupt my cycle. Kindly help.

Hello,

One can take them if they wish, but it is not advisable for as long as your cycle has not come, for us to exclude a pregnancy.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you for the reply.

I would like to understand your reply in a better way. Can pregnancy be excluded or not? I also suffer from PCOS and have irregular periods sometimes. I am still concerned if i would be pregnant. Kindly help.
