Could an eosinophil count of 0.8 be a sign of leukemia?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a complete blood count (CBC) with 0.8 eosinophil cells per microliter of blood. It has been high for four months now, although it was normal previously. I have no symptoms, but I am very scared. How likely is this to be leukemia?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

It is completely normal to feel scared when you see something like an elevated eosinophil count on your blood test. First, take a deep breath. An eosinophil level of 0.8 (which likely means 800 cells/µL) is only mildly elevated, and leukemia is not the most likely cause, especially if you have had no symptoms like fatigue, weight loss, fever, or easy bruising.

Eosinophils can increase for many more common and less serious reasons, such as allergies, asthma, skin conditions, or even parasitic infections, some of which can occur without any symptoms at all.

The fact that your levels were normal before and are now only slightly elevated, and that you are otherwise feeling fine, is very reassuring. It is a good idea to follow up with your doctor to monitor the levels. They may suggest a few additional tests to rule out common causes, but try not to jump to the worst-case scenario.

Leukemia usually presents with more dramatic changes in blood counts and clear symptoms. You are doing the right thing by staying on top of your health and asking questions; just try not to let worry get ahead of the facts.

I hope this helps.

Take care.

Regards.
