Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was diagnosed and treated for epididymitis. I have taken an entire course of antibiotics, and my pain has dramatically subsided. However, I feel some discomfort when I lift my scrotum. I am aware that the discomfort can last while the inflammation heals. However, I am curious about what the pain has been reported as feeling post-treatment. This has taken a mental toll on me, and I am worried that the infection could start again. I took two Doxycycline for ten days. I also was given an intramuscular shot during my visit with my PCP. Ultrasound shows no masses, no torsion, hydroceles, and normal vascularity. Please help.

Thanks.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Sometimes it takes around three months in total to be back to normal. You may need to take antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs for four to six weeks for the infection to heal completely. Scrotal support lessens pain and helps in healing.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.

Patient's Query

Hi,

Thank you for the reply.

My main concern is infection recurrence. I feel like it is gone since the pain is mostly gone; however, I still feel slight discomfort when moving my testicles. I assume this is normal, as it can take some time to heal, and the area is sensitive due to the previous inflammation. I want to confirm that what I am experiencing is normal.

Thanks.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Yes, what you are experiencing is entirely normal. However, what else you can do is to get an ultrasound scrotum and a physical examination to see whether the infection has subsided completely. If residual inflammation persists, you can continue the medication for two more weeks.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

If infection were to remain, would I start noticing the same symptoms as I did, and approximately how long after the antibiotics have run their course would they begin to appear again? Once again, thank you for the quick responses. It has made me feel much better about my current situation.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

This is a side effect of antibiotics. But you need not to worry. You can add one multivitamin once a day to counter this. Secondly, mobilize yourself after regular intervals.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

I was prescribed Doxycycline for 10 days. However, I have been off of them for over a week. Should this be a cause for concern?

Thanks.

Answered by Dr. Ankush Jairath

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

If you have already stopped it for a week, it can be unrelated to this drug issue. However, the treatment (vitamin B complex-containing tablets) remains the same. This should subside within a week or so. So do not worry.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

Yesterday I began exercising again as the pain had subsided significantly, and I want to get back in the swing of my life before being diagnosed with epididymitis. I ran a few miles and, by the end of the day, noticed that my thighs were getting sore after being out of exercise for so long. However, I did see the irritation in my testicles slightly return, although I have been off antibiotics for over a week. Is this normal? I have noticed a dull pain when pulling up on my testicles. However, it was slightly more noticeable after exercise. Should I refrain from exercising until I am better, or is this a sign that the infection could return?

Thanks

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. It can be due to the thing that you did the exercise after a long gap. But I will advise you to give proper scrotal support while running or exercising. Resolving epididymitis is not a contraindication for exercising. You can exert a little less to start.

I hope this information will help you. Thanks.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Should I not pull on my scrotal area while healing? For some reason, that is now the only way I can tell if discomfort remains. However, if I do it often, the pain becomes more noticeable.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Doing it occasionally will make no difference, but you should give proper scrotal support while walking, standing, or running.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.
