Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 23-year-old boy and I am addicted to masturbation for the past six to seven years. I masturbate three to four times weekly. Will there be any problems in the future because of this? Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Many people think that they are addicted to masturbation or sex, but they have actually gotten used to masturbating or having sex regularly and are unable to quit easily. Addiction is problematic but being used to is not, though there is only a thin line separating both. Masturbation or sex is not harmful as long as it is not an addiction. We need to determine if you are addicted or just used to it. Sex thoughts, sex addiction, masturbation addiction, porn film addiction, and so on come under behavior addiction. Behavioral addiction is a form of addiction that involves a compulsion to engage in a rewarding non-drug-related behavior, sometimes called a natural reward without any negative consequences on the person's physical, mental, social, or financial well-being. Behavior addiction needs to be curbed or controlled using one's self willpower. Divert your mind and body away from the circumstances that compel you to do the addictive habit through physical exercises, games, entertainment, and so on. Never sleep alone. Be always with your family even at night. These are some of the tips. Willpower is the key. Behavioral therapy also works well.

Take care.
