Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 26 year old male. My problem is exhibitionism. I try to flash my penis to women. I know it is a bad habit. But I am not able to stop it. Please help me stop this bad behavior.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It is good that you have taken the very first step required for resolution of your problem and you accomplished that by seeking help. This is not recognized as a problem by a major part of the population due to ignorance or other reasons best known to them.

There are various methods of treatment available for exhibitionism:

  • Medicines - multiple options are available which are also associated with one or more side effects. One of the safer alternatives among them is SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) a kind of antidepressants. The other options are antiandrogens like Medroxyprogesterone which reduces the testosterone levels leading to control of abnormal behavior and decreased libido.
  • Surgery - generally used in convicted sexual offenders and not routinely practiced.
  • Chemical castration - very effective treatment but with multiple side effects like weight gain, hyperglycemia (increased blood sugar levels), diabetes, and hypertension.
  • Cognitive therapy - a kind of talk therapy which alters your thought process.
  • Behavior therapy - this is also a kind of talk therapy which aims to alter your behavior.
As exhibitionism is a chronic and persistent disorder, a constant and dedicated effort is required on part of both the patient and the therapist to achieve positive improvement. Please be reminded that legal problems like imprisonment are common outcomes of exhibitionism. So, it is not wise to wait for a spontaneous resolution of the problem.
