Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I was kicked in the eye by a small dog breed two months ago. The dog lacerated my eye three times simultaneously, cutting the interior upper cavity and the back of my eyelid. I was told I might get some visual distortion or scars that would be corrected by surgery. I was not offered surgery or recommended to a specific eye doctor or anyone else; the hospital gave me six Vicodin and sent me. Since the event, however, a black dot that has appeared in my visual spectrum and sweeps to the right almost immediately disappears. It happens approximately 12 to 20 times a day. It has driven me insane. I live in an apartment building where I have pets. And this is beginning to take a toll on my mental stress, as I keep thinking I see roaches or light dimming out of the corner in my peripheral. I am not sure how to proceed to get this taken care of. Still, I have ordered an eye patch for the time being, and I cannot drive or engage in physically demanding activities. I am constantly being distracted by this trace in my vision that does not seem to go away or get any better. My eye still feels as if someone is scraping it with their nails sometimes in the mornings when I wake up and open my eyelid. I have chronic dryness, redness, and agitation of my left eye during morning hours. I have switched from regular eyedrops, which have had zero positive effect, to a lubricated eyedrop, which seems to reduce irritation and the continual drying feeling of the back of my eyelid. Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

By your description, it seems like you had a laceration of lids which has healed by now. Irritation and dryness can be felt as the smoothness of lids is lost after injury and may take several months to heal. You can continue to use lubricant eye drops as and when required. And about black floaters in your field of vision, this may be due to small bleeding or blood clot inside your eyes, which might distort your vision. This, however, will take several months to settle and get absorbed completely. I suggest you try a few things at home, like, sleeping by head elevation with two to three pillows. If it is severe, I suggest you get a complete evaluation by a nearby eye surgeon. Better assessment can be done by sending pictures of your eyes and old records. Thank you.
