Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 88-year-old grandmother is unable to get an appointment with her eye doctor because of this current pandemic. Over the past couple of weeks, she claims to be almost entirely blind. She has some degenerative eye disorder, but I am not sure what it is. She takes a lot of Lumigan drops and another drop. She said her eyes burn and itch bad and she has trouble sleeping. She also uses Refresh tears drops all the time. She would like to know if she could stop taking the drops for now because her eyes hurt so badly or if it will cause her to go blind even faster. Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern. Has she been operated on for a cataract? Because that can also be a reason for decreasing vision. Can you please share her earlier prescription and reports? Does she have IOP earlier?

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

Yes, she had cataract surgery. She also had two hips surgeries, but I am not sure if that matters. Her eyes are red all around. The prescribed medications are Combigan .02, Lumigan .01, and Refresh teardrops. She is also complaining of a headache. There is no IOP. Do you think there is anything I could get her to help relieve the pain? Or do you think it will cause harm to stop these medicines?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

If the pressures are raised, then stopping these drops will further increase the pain. But if it is because of increased inflammation due to steroids, then stopping may help to some extent, but may increase the IOP and further causes pain. What you should do is stop her, Lumigan. Continue with Combigan (Brimonidine tartrate and Timolol maleate) as usual. BD (8 AM and 8 PM). Use Systane ultra eye drop (Polyethylene glycol and Propylene glycol) two-hourly on both eyes. Add Moxi KT (Ketorolac and Moxifloxacin) eye drop for two weeks. I hope this should work. Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
