Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 28-year-old female, having continuous fasciculations on my left thigh for the last three days. How likely it is to be ALS?

Answered by Dr. Hitesh Kumar

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I would like to know some details about your symptoms:

1. Are the fasciculations you mentioned limited to the left thigh or some other body parts? If yes, please tell me which body parts.

2. Are these fasciculations visible by eyes or only felt by you inside?

3. Do you feel weakness in leg movement flexing the hip, straightening the hip, or taking the leg sideways?

4. Do you feel any tingling, pins and needles sensation, pain in the thigh region, or other body parts?

5. Have you had any lower back pain?

6. Do you notice any thinning of the thigh muscle or other body parts?

7. How is your inner mood in day-to-day activities toward the happy side, the sad side, or the worried side?

8. Have you any other associated medical co-morbidity?

9. Are you on any regular medications? If yes, please tell details.

10. Did you do any vigorous exercise or gym recently?

Thank you.

Investigations to be done

T3, T4, and TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone).

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

The fasciculations are on the left thigh and left calf sometimes. They are visible to the eyes. There are no pins and needle sensations. No visible thinning of muscle. I do have lower back pain. I am taking the tablet Flecainide for SVT with no rigorous exercise. Kindly suggest.

Answered by Dr. Hitesh Kumar

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

If these are visible by eyes, possibly these are fasciculations. If they are since three days only and you do not have any weakness or atrophy (thinning of muscle) in the thigh region, you can observe the symptoms. Fasciculations on only one side of the thigh region do not fulfill the clinical criteria of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis).

Thank you.

Investigations to be done

T3, T4, and TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone). Serum Calcium and Magnesium. Serum vitamin D3.

Regarding follow up

Review as and when required.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
