Patient's Query

Hi,

I have a pet dog who has been completely vaccinated. My dog has only minimal interaction with other stray dogs. While playing with my dog, I recently got a small scratch on my arm from its teeth. I have studied online that rabies is most commonly spread from infected animals to humans through an animal bite. Should I consult a doctor and take an injection? Or is it fine to ignore as it is only a small scratch?

Please suggest.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

Since your dog is fully vaccinated for rabies (as per your narrative), vaccinating yourself may not be needed.

However, it is best to consult a local doctor since your pet dog interacts with stray dogs. The scratch should be cleaned with water and disinfectants.

I suggest you take post-exposure prophylaxis with antirabies vaccination.

Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
