Will I get rabies if my dog licked me after getting scratched by a stray dog whose vaccination status is unknown?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My dog is vaccinated fully, but when I took her for a walk, she played with another stray dog whose vaccination status was unknown. So, the dog scratched my dog, and she started bleeding due to abrasion. I did not watch this. My dog licked her wound, and then she licked me. Should my dog or I get vaccinated again? Will my dog or I get rabies from that dog?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It is unlikely that the stray dog was rabid. I hope your dog is fully vaccinated for her age. If so, her chances of getting rabies are minimal. For adult dogs, the rabies vaccination is good for three years and should be given at the first visit for new patients. For example, a puppy would receive the rabies vaccine at 16 weeks, one year, and then again at four. Hopefully, you have cleaned your pet's wounds with soap and water. I suggest you consult a veterinary physician and observer the signs and symptoms of rabies if any. As for you, if you are previously vaccinated, I suggest you receive two IM (intramuscular) doses (1.0 ml each) of the vaccine, one immediately and the other three days later. However, as per your history narrated by you in your query, it does not appear you had been bitten or scratched by the dog but only licked, which is a category one exposure. For category 1 exposure, washing of exposed skin surfaces is required. No post-exposure prophylaxis or rabies vaccine is required.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
