Metronidazole is a Nitrimidazole prototype drug used for the treatment of anaerobic bacterial infections. It is sold under the brand name Flagyl. It is widely used in combination with other antibiotics in oro-dental infections and protozoal infections. Adverse effects include metallic taste, anorexia, abdominal cramps, headache, dizziness, dryness of mouth, glossitis, etc. In alcoholics, it can cause disulfiram-like intolerance when taken with alcohol. Prolonged use may cause peripheral neuropathy. It is contraindicated in the first trimester of pregnancy due to its carcinogenic potential.
